Here's a little shootout of different types of Rectifier Tubes in the Mesa RevF Recto.

Settings were the same except the Master which I turned a cunthait down on the silicon clip to compensate for the difference in volume.

The Contestants are:

Silicon Diodes

EH 5U4GB

JJ GZ34

make sure to adjust the volumes

the whole thing is doubletracked (thanks again for the DIs)

I used to have another set in the Recto first (some big Coke Bottle type Tubes)....the amp got muh tighter when I replaced those with the EH5u4g...
but now after I tried the GZ34 I think the 5u4 will have to go...I just like the GZ34 better I think (actually very close to the silicon IMO)

I definitely preferred the EH 5U4GB. It sounded to me like the silicon diodes had an amount of undesirable fizz/solid-state-like sizzle to them, which the GZ34 had just a little bit less of. Nevertheless I feel the EH 5U4GB sounded a bit clearer. But, perhaps I'm mad...

the JJ clip is louder ...
but i like it anyway
the EH 5u4gb sounds really good too

the first one has some kind of fizz-something that doesnt sound "bad" but the others sound better
