so after mentioning it a week or two ago, i was inspired to get the DVD and watch it. it's actually kind of cool, with a similar feel to Re-Animator and Castle Freak and the Yuzna movies. The protagonist isn't Jeffrey Combs but it looks just like him; there's a tied-up naked woman at the climax; it keeps some of the themes of The Shadow Over Innsmouth surprisingly well even though it's transplanted to the coast of Spain. Most of the movie is essentially a chase scene, just like the book!
Some major themes were definitely missing, though; they really underplayed the "evils of miscegenation" current that's so strong in the original story, and while that makes the movie a lot less racist, it also takes away from the ugly horror that's captured so well in the written form: that the loathesome horror I've been running from is WITHIN ME.
Worth a watch, though. And I've never seen From Beyond, but I'm going to check it out now.
