Today is the 494th anniversary of the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516.

Let's all celebrate by drinking a delicious Bavarian style beer!!

Is the german beer sold in the US actually brewed under the purity law? (believe it's not from what I remember...)

Edit: Forgot.........PROST!, anyway :kickass:

I think it's great that you can't just throw some random piss together and call it beer... should be applied worldwide IMO.

There are actually a TON of awesome beers brewed in the US from all the microbreweries we have, but outside the country, people tend to only be familiar with Budweiser and all the garbage that actually comes from companies who are big enough to export their stuff.

Pretty high concentration of microbreweries in the Pacific Northwest where I'm from, too :kickass:

I've always wanted to try some major US brews though, to see if they're as horrible as people make them out to be. Somehow it's manifested in my mind that a Bud Light just has to taste like a mixture of freedom, bubble gum and David Hasselhoff!

A big Plus Fucking One to Aaron's post! NW Craft Breweries FTMFW!!

Its this tiny aspect of reality that makes me glad to live in America, and makes living in Oregon a little less shitty. There's a ton of breweries up here that kick ass, especially if you're a hop head like me. Most american hops are grown right in here in Oregon and Washington, so a lot of brewers get them on the cheap and aren't afraid to use them in generous amounts.

Gotta give props to Europe, of course, as the birthplace of beer as we know it. Hell, even Budweiser is a watered down version of a german lager, and China's Tsing Tao or however the fuck it's spelled is as European as leiderhosen, however the fuck that's spelled.

When I was down in California last week it was utterly depressing noticing that Annheiser Busch seemed to be the only player at most of the stores I visited. Sierra Nevada being a huge exception. I fucking hate AB. They're like the fucking Monster Cable of the beer world, except they try to be all sneaky and come up with beers that look like craft brews, to try to muscle the little guys off the shelves. Fucking cocksuckers.

I adore Rogue Ales, Deschutes, Ninkasi, and McMenamins here in Oregon. Also big up to CA's Sierra Nevada, and Stone Brewery for kicking large amounts of ass, among others.

Fuck I think I'll have me a beer now. :kickass:

The original Budweiser is actually Czech.
And yeah, lots of foreign (from my perspective) beers like Tsingtao have german master brewers or at least one who started and taught somebody.
Since a lot of the beer's quality has to do with the quality of the water (that's why the Czech Budweiser is so good) they unfortunately very rarely come close to real good ones.

But I believe without a doubt that there are excellent beers from the small US breweries.

I've totally noticed this too! When I was down in LA with the band in January, every single grocery store we went in was just crammed full of macro crap. Totally disappointing. According to ratebeer.com, there are some stores with good brew selections, but it's nothing like the Pacific Northwest, where even the worst grocery store selections still yield plenty of drinkable choices!

I toured the Stone brewery in Escondido in January...really cool. The tour guide said that the amount of beer that Annheiser-Busch spills in a year at their breweries is over ten times the amount of beer that Stone brews in a year! I was thinking though- the lack of ingredients in an Annheiser-Busch brew makes those spills probably hardly any worse for the their bottom line than if they had just been spilling water

Band video blog from the Stone tour, in case anyone is interested:

Notice the Behringer PA speakers  What they lack in pro audio knowledge, they make up for in their beer :)

Haha yeah, let´s celebrate it. That is so true here, what Slash said...

"think it's great that you can't just throw some random piss together and call it beer"

I´m absolutely open minded for non German beer though. As I was in the States, Heineken, Becks and some beer from Belgium was mostly available. I did not find the possibility to try an American beer, but I´m sure there are a lot people who know how to brew.
