On September 27th, 1986, a legend lost his life in a terrible accident. Cliff Burton, bassist for the metal band Metallica, was an incredibly talented bass player, in fact one of the greatest to ever live. However, on a cold September morning in Sweden, the tour bus that the band was traveling in supposedly hit some black ice and rolled on its side. Cliff had drawn cards to see which bunk he could get and he took Kirk's bunk. Cliff was thrown out of the bus through the window and the bus landed on him. At this point no one was sure if Cliff was alive or dead because they had lifted the bus up and there were still people alive and trapped under the bus. When they tried to get Cliff from underneath the bus, a cable broke on the crane they were using to lift the bus. The bus landed on Cliff sealing his fate for sure. James Hetfield has stated that he vividly recalls walking down the road for miles in his underwear and socks looking for black ice to no avail. Some say the driver may have been drinking.
Cliff was only 24 years old.
Many musicians are recognized for their accomplishments in music.
Every September 27th, take a moment and remember a fallen legend.
