Repercussions for racially derogatory banter?

No, we're talking specifically about the work place. So where at work is it ok for a black man to be racially offensive towards a white person? I've been working for 12 years now, in two continents, and have NEVER seen that to be acceptable in any shape, way, or form.

My company makes lay off's whenever they feel like it (just to balance the books mostly). I have zero doubt in my mind that if my HR found out that someone was being racist, or harrasing a co-worker, they would be escorted out that building before the day was over.

The potential litigation of unfairly dismissing an employee wouldn't even come CLOSE to the liability of a company if they were to retain an employee known to be offensive in that manner.

Again though, I have to assume this differs from workplace to workplace.

in the white collar corporate world that might be true ... but things change drastically in blue collar jobs ... from my experience anyway
