retrovalves

Can't listen in work, are they solid state? That's funny, AMT just recently announced they were developing some solid state 'tubes'!

Ah, I see you've already mentioned AMT. Looks interesting but if they cost more than glass tubes will they be worth it?

well, they're a bit pricier, but if they're 100% reliable and don't really age I can totally see me using them live...
especially for the power amp section, moving an amp around when the tubes are still hot (aka live use) makes them age sooooo fast...

Can't check the video out yet but +10000000000000000000000000000.

Very cool! They do sound quite different to me though. Its no surprise that AMT would be involved in this, I just bought three of their pedal preamps and am blown away by them. With new good sounding JFET preamps and digital stuff like the AxeFx and the Kemper, I wonder if we're starting to actually see guitar amplification moving in the direction of solid state, slowly ditching vacuum tube technology...

Lasse, I have been using them for the last 4 months in my JetCity20 .... They are INCREDIBLE! Seriously, this is about to change the game!

Doug over at Jet City sent me 2 variety packs. If you like I can talk to him and see if I can get you a few sets to so some demos. Hit me up on Facebook.

He is also shipping me their new JetDirect box, that I will have a demo for once I get it. you guys are gonna love this thing.

I haven't done a huge amount of gigging with tube amps, but is it really that common for preamp tubes to fail? (certainly not in a studio environment I'd say) Thus, I'm more interested in the power tubes, cuz THAT seems fucking awesome (being able to make any amp a hybrid tube/ss)

I spoke to Doug at JetCity about the same thing. the power and preamp sections of an amp are VERy different, and the Solid State circuitry needs to be different to allow for difference in power.

When I talked to him and said, ya know, If you guys Power Amp tubes it would be bad ass! His reply was .... "Trust me".

I can only take that as a "we are working on it", so lets just hope.

The power pentode Fetron (the SS replacement of the vacuum tubes including the 6L6) has been around since the 60s. They aren't really made too much anymore as valves where completely phased out, but they do exist.

In the first Jet City clip, I thought the retrovalve sounded cool blended... hmm.

In the Asian Jet City Clip, the retro valve definitely has less harmonics and "goods" surrounding the single notes (by goods I mean content that made the single notes sound "wider."

+1

However, what really makes this big is the possibility of replacement power tubes - for live it would make such a big difference.

wouldn't this turn your expensive tube amp into a solid state amp? Kind of defies the purpose. Or am I missing something?
