RIAA layin' down the law

I saw a news brief the other day about the Recording Industry Association of America filing a lawsuit against several Boston area colleges and universities and several hundred students for using Internet2 to illeagally download movies and music.
As a card varrying ASCAP member, I fully support this. IF I want to give my songs away for free, I'll post them on the internet on websites such as myspace, garageband, soundclick, etc.
I don't think it's right for people to illeagally download songs or other copyrighted material. If a person wants those songs bad enough, they should be willing to pay for them.

I agree. I always buy cd's/albums by the band's that I like/listen to for a few reasons. Personally I like the artwork that comes on cd's etc., as well as lyric sheets, thank you lists etc. Plus the sound quality on cd/vinyl is overall better than mp3's that you download off sites like Kazaa. Finally, when I buy cd's or dvd's by bands, especially younger underground artists, I feel like I'm helping to support them by buying their album or concert dvd.

While I respect your thoughts......

There's no way in HELL I'll pay 15 - 20 dollars for a cd w/ less than 3 good songs on it. Unless it's a well crafted album it dosen't warrant a purchase.

Face it, this is a losing battle on the RIAA's part.

I agree that the RIAA isn't gonna stop people downloading for free period. No matter what people will always find a way to get music for free. Personally the only kind of people that bug me are the people that ONLY download mousic for free. People that NEVER buy albums, cuz they have what they need on their computer. That's bullshit. I think some people forget that being a musician is a job, just like any other, and they deserve to get paid for their work. Just because you as a customer can't afford it dosen't give you the right to take it for free. Can you afford a Porsche? If you can't it dosen't give you the right to steal one from the dealership. At the same time I agree with what Greg was saying about overpriced cd's. People in general can't afford to buy 25, 30$ cd's all the time, the music industry has to fix that ASAP. That's one of the main reasons imo that people download music in the first place!!! It's just common sense that if cd's were cheaper more people would buy them. I should have pointed this out in my last post, but while I agree that people should always purchase music, I don't think going after those schools and students is gonna do much.

I buy Cd's from time to time but once i get a player of some sort, i'd be more than happy to just purchase the songs itself and pick and choose what i want.

Too many times you've been suckered to buy a cd with 10 out of 12 songs that are just total shit and never hit your radio dial.

If albums were cheaper I'd probably cut my d/l by at least 60%. I just got tired of the gamble of "pay 20 bucks and maybe have 2 decent track w/ 9 fillers or 9 decent tracks w/ 2 fillers".

All you professional musicians out there, don't get pissed at me. Get pissed at your record company making shitloads off your albums while giving you 10 cents.

Well Greg,
I do agree that it sucks when bands put out a cd thats got 15 tracks o' crap and a few gems. But let's say I put out a CD that sells for 15 bucks at the local record store and it has 15 songs on it. Sooooooo, that's a buck a song. Now, you take out the retailers cut, the distributors cut, the record labels cut, etc. etc. and I the artist get 10 cents a song after everybody gets there share. Sooooooooo, I make $1.50 a CD. I've hit the big time  Now, let us pretend in fairy tale land that you and 9,999,999 of your close and personal friends go onto istoleyourmusic.com and illeagally down load my song that my pissed off son put on this website because i wouldn't by him a new guitar for his birthday. I just got screwed out of 1million dollars.
Now I relize that these figures are ficticous, and that is not how the whole thing works, BUT I made that example to simplify things. Or better yet, What if one of the recording engineers that works in the studio I'm recording my new hit single "i pooped in your mouth" takes and copies a rough scratch track of my song and posts it on the web a week before it's scheduled release date??
I like having control over what my music does. If I'm trying to money with my music I don't want some 15 year old in Chicago or Hoboken putting my stuff on the web for free. I don't know if this could be stopped, but if some teenaged kid gets the smack layed down on him and taken into court and his mom and dad have sell off everything they own to pay for the kids screw up, it may set a nice example for people.
In the real world, I'm a mechanic and I charge money for fixing cars. I'm not going to bust my knuckles for 8 hours and just hand you back your car without a few hundred bucks coming my way.

I do have bands that I support by buying the albums and 9 times out of ten if I purchase it - it's b/c I thought the shit I d/l was killer.

I use it as an insurance policy. I KNOW I'm not gettin' screwed if I d/l and like it first. But I'll buy it for the sale and the artwork and liner notes.

This is why I usually buy my CD's used. I pay between $6 & $8. I know some musicians think this is wrong too, but the way I see it is if someone wants to sell a used car or TV, it's OK, so why not CD's? The band allready made money off the sale of it so why not?

Here is why I say FUCK THE RIAA, and FUCK THE MOTION PICTURE INDUSTRY, and why I will always download.

1)How many times do I have to buy the same album, casette, cd, and what ever the next format is. If I paid for it once...than I have the right to download it when ever my cd gets scratched.

2)If you put out a good cd..then I will support your band by, buying tickets to your concert, your T-Shirt, and what ever else you might be selling...so in turn I get your cd for free.

3)I will gladly pay the artist who recorded the CD what they are due in royalties (about 50 cents to 2. bucks) fuck the rest of that bullshit 20 bucks a cd.

4)If they stop putting out shit movies like Gigli, anything with Ben Affleck, or Scobby Do, Ms Congeniality 2 and all that bullshit, maybe I wont download your crap movie. I sure as hell aint paying 10 bucks to sit through 2 hours of bullshit. If I was able to download the new Star Wars, or the War of The Worlds, or Hitchhikers Guide, I will still pay 10 bucks to see it in the theater 100 times, then buy the DVD. But again, I am not wasting my hard earned money on the bullshit Hollywood puts out on a weekly basis.

If I purchase a cd for X amount of money I should beable to share this with whomever I like, since I did pay for the recording fair and square.

And this form of music was popularized by music sharing and underground networks of people swapping cassettes

Ok Have any of you downloaded any Anthrax's music from the Web... I must admit i downloaded TGOTE's advanced copy but on the DAy of the Release i searched a few stores then found the only copy with a cracked case(go Figure no respect) at the Virgin Mega Store in San Francisco..... Honestly, the only Anthrax song I've ever downloaded, was Among The Living. I downloaded it b/c I had the ATL album on tape, and I wanted to hear the song (the tape is REALLy worn + old) I bought the album on cd after I downloaded the song, plus I had a copy of ATL anyway. I got no problem with downloading, just as long as you at least own some of the albums, merch, been to concerts of the band you're downloading. I'm sure most of you won't/don't give a shit, but I think James Murphy explained how downloading effects underground artists in a negative way, on the Spiritual Healing post on his board. I'm not some anti downloading person, like DeathsHead said the thrash scene (and others) got huge exposure through tape trading, which is what downloading pretty much is. Downloading also gives exposure to newer bands as well. I just think bands/artists deserve to get paid for their work.

Here's the thing... some of the websites I've mentioned earlier (garageband.com, myspace.com) give the artist the option of letting people download their music and that is great. for all of us 'starving artists' out there, exposure is priceless. i'll give out 2 - 5 songs for free in hopes that you'll spend the 10 -15 bucks of your hard earned cash on my music AND like what you get. I'm just like any whore out there.... fuck me all you want but don't forget to pay me!!!!
