One would think that an audio style goose neck could be a solution, hell why don't I make one ;-)
 
Rim mounting drum mics is a really bad idea.
The mic picks up the vibration from the hit a few milliseconds before the diaphragm picks up the sound wave, greatly smearing the attack of the sound.

OK for live due to not needing stands for each drum but I would never use rim mounts for recording.
 
I've heard many times people say not to mount mics on the rim, but I've never had a problem with the Sennheiser e604s mounted to the rims of toms. *shrug*
