A legend has died. Van Halen was kind of a gateway band for me, but I've never ceased to be amazed by their immaculate, punchy sound, and I remember how much it blew my mind when I first explored their discog.
I'm not a guitar player, but I imagine metal owes a big debt to Eddie's soloing technique.

Of course, I could never play like him. I never tried. Only an idiot competes with Eddie Van Halen ... we were working with Ted Templeman and he played me just the naked tracks of Edward’s guitars, and even just one track, one microphone of Edward’s guitar just sounded like an orchestra. Perfectly packaged in this powerfully dynamic expression.
