Rock In Opposition

There isn't much good material in this genre. However, Univers Zero, which I think qualifies as a band that plays "RIO," is fantastic, as well as Henry Cow and a newer act called Guapo.

Guapo eh? never heard. I'm familiar with the others, and i also really like Art Zoyd, Art Bears, Magma (if you want to count them in), Thinking Plague, Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic, and 5uu's. I've never really been completely clear on what defines the genre (besides some kind of conglomeration of prog rock, and contemporary classical, and a generally dark/strange atmosphere), so i've never really known where to look for new stuff.

Have you listened to any of the recent Univers Zero stuff? I have Heresie and Ceux Du Dehors, but i know they've done a couple in the 2000's. Wondering if they are worth picking up.

To be honest, I haven't heard any of Univer Zero's 90s and 2000s material, but I have heard the ones you listed and Uzed and Heatwave, both of which are great, more relentless, and darker, if possible. According to reviews I've read though, their latest material seems to be consistent in quality. And yeah admittedly, I haven't a clue of what defines RIO. Magma seems to fall into the Zheul category, although some claim they really play RIO, while still others say their music IS zheul combined with progressive rock and other elements which make it zheul, like you said.
