So as you guys know I am in the process of getting a project studio together the location will be a local mini storage with climate control the room is 14x38. First I was wondering if this room is large enough to warrant HS80's or if 50's would be good. I was also wondering if it is possible to build your own bass traps the ones I've found are hella expensive. What are some other things I could do on a budget to get the best sound without spending an ass load of cash.

HS80's will do fine. You can easily do basstraps and broadband absorbers yourself. Do a google search on "superchunks" and "broadband absorbers" and you'll find loads of guides and picture stories. If you want to learn where to place them and why, have a look at http://www.johnlsayers.com/ and http://www.realtraps.com/

Or if you feel adventurous and you aren't one of them "oh, but I don't need to know all that unnecessary crap" dudes, get hold of BBC's Guide To Acoustic Practice.
