Kevan Staples, co-founder of Canadian rock band, Rough Trade, passed away on Sunday, March 23 at 74 years of age. Details on his passing are currently unavailable.
The sad news was shared by Staples’ Rough Trade bandmate, the legendary Carole Pope, who wrote the following via her Instagram account earlier today (March 24): “Yesterday my beautiful friend and #roughtrade co-creator @kevanstaples passed away. He was a bright light that will burn forever.”
Arguably Rough Trade’s most famous song, “High School Confidential” (co-written by Carole Pope and Kevan Staples) marked the band’s breakthrough Top 40 hit in Canada. The song is featured on Rough Trade’s sophomore album, Avoid Freud, released in Canada in 1980 via True North. “High School Confidential” was famously controversial for its explicitly sexual lyrics. Toronto radio station, CHUM-FM, even paid for the band to record a cleaned-up version of the song.
