The original Black Sabbath – Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward – will perform together for the first time in 20 years when they take to the stage to headline the sold-out Back To The Beginning event on July 5 at Villa Park in Birmingham, England.
The all-star event will celebrate the true creators of heavy metal and will see Ozzy – who is battling Parkinson’s Disease – play his own short set before joining with Black Sabbath for his final bow. All profits will go to the following charities: Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Acorn Children’s Hospice, a Children’s Hospice supported by Aston Villa.
Back To The Beginning will feature sets from Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, Gojira, Halestorm, Alice In Chains, Lamb Of God, Anthrax Mastodon, and Rival Sons.
The all-day event will also feature a supergroup of musicians. Artists include Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins), David Draiman (Disturbed), Duff McKagan & Slash (Guns ‘n Roses), Frank Bello (Anthrax), Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), Jake E Lee, Jonathan Davis (Korn), K.K. Downing, Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Mike Bordin (Faith No More), Rudy Sarzo, Sammy Hagar, Scott Ian (Anthrax), Sleep Token II (Sleep Token), Papa V Perpetua (Ghost), Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine), Wolfgang Van Halen, Zakk Wylde, Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), David Ellefson (Megadeth), Vernon Reid (Living Colour), Whitfield Crane (Ugly Kid Joe), and Andrew Watt.
Bass legend Rudy Sarzo, who performed with Ozzy Osbourne from 1981 to 1982, and is also involved in the Back To The Beginning event, spoke with For Bass Players Only about his participation.
Says Sarzo, “I was invited to participate at the Back To The Beginning for Black Sabbath and Ozzy, and I’m really, really looking forward to it. For me, personally, it’s also a ‘back to the beginning’ of my own, and to be able to show gratefulness, being grateful to Ozzy and Sharon, of course [late Ozzy guitarist] Randy [Rhoads], but Randy…. he knows, Randy knows how grateful I am ’cause I told him a few times, not really thinking that he was going to pass away. He knows how grateful I was of him being responsible for introducing me to Ozzy and Sharon, and putting his reputation on the line for me to be in the band. So yeah, it’s going to be very emotional.
Rudy adds, “From what I know, which is not a whole lot because there’s a lot of moving parts to the show, so I’m not constantly prying, ‘so what are we doing?’, you know, I just… whenever they need to let me know what’s going on, I will know. All I know is that I’m on the road with Quiet Riot, being back for about thee or four years, and I’m super excited about that, to be able to celebrate the legacy of the band and the members who are no longer with us, you know, every night on stage, that’s a blessing on it’s own. Then you add being part of the last Black Sabbath show with Ozzy, ever.
“Ozzy’s last show, to be there, that’s a blessing to me beyond words, to be able to do that. It’s just one show, one charity show, with many other bands that were associated, not only with the genre, but also they opened up for Ozzy. They got their career breaks, you know, opening up for Ozzy on tour and Ozzfest and things like that. So you have Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, all the big ones, participating. It is very exciting, because you know, there’s a tendency nowadays for artists to kind of like fade out. You don’t even know that they have quit, they retired, basically. They just fade out. And going out with a bang, you know, you can’t fade out if you’re somebody like Ozzy who lived his life larger than life. Everything was bigger than life, it’s Ozzy. You can’t expect him to just quietly go into history. No, he’s gotta go out with a huge fricking bang, probably the biggest bang ever. He deserves it. He’s gotta do it.”
