Running effects through a 4x12"

This is probably a stupid question but here goes..

Can you run something like a POD XT through a 4x12" Cabinet and hope to get sound. OR do you need an amplifier. Or can it be done with POD + something else (e.g. not a head)

Unless the effects unit that you're using has a built in amplifier, you won't get anything out of your cabinet. The end.

you can run the POD through a power amp them into the cab. It will sound like shit.

Not necessarily. The Pod can be set up poorly and sound shitty, but Pod through power amp is actually a pretty nice rig.
