so...I bought subject cd on friday...
Summertime Blues
Heart Full of Soul
The Seeker
For What Its Worth
Shapes of Things
Mr. Soul
Crossroads
Seven and Seven Is
its gotta be taken with a grain of salt because it is all covers but overall I enjoyed it...I was familiar with most of the originals and I was curious how they would sound all "Geddy-ized." There was only one tune I didn't think worked and if I remember correctly it was Shapes of Things...one of the most intriguing things was hearing Alex playing the most straightforward guitar of his career, short of their debut album.
Hearing their version of Summertime Blues makes me realize Blue Cheer definitely deserves at least honorable mention for one of the very first real metal songs, if not being a real metal band (debateable). That song (itself a cover of an Eddie Cochran song) was released in Spring 68. I looked up a couple more, like Cream's live cover of Crossroads (spring 68) and Iron Butterfly's Inna-Gadda-da-Vida (also summer 68); they are all hyped up bluesy stuff but with definite pointers to what was to come.
And I am so glad they covered Seven and Seven is. Love is one of the totally best bands of the sixties and deserves more notice for sure.
All in all, if you like Rush, you'll like this. If you only like a couple of their albums, you probably won't want to buy this, although its not really a full length CD - its being sold at EP price.
