a video from the pre-pro sessions... kinda glosses over the concept really.... leaves out loads of the work we did over 10 days... finalizing arrangements, deciding tempos, rooting out clashing notes and harmonies, etc... but may be interesting to you guys all the same as it's a band i'm producing and mixing for Nuclear Blast.

Damn, fancy lookin video there James! Preprod is Preprod, but that video looks really good.
ha... yeah, i have a nice cam... but i didn't do the editing or anything else... a professional video guy in NY did it for them... and hopefully will do all the remaining episodes.

That's killer James, I loooove this stuff. Why is it we are always the "ass kickers" ? I've heard this more than once from other bands I have worked with as well. What’s fun is setting up tempo maps and watching them freak out because they never knew what time signature they were in.

yeah, i made the switch and bought an HD3 Accel rig about a year and half ago. will never go back. Drum tracking is now done on this session and the next episode will likely cover that.

Great stuff..Looking forward to the final recording. :kickass:

Hey James how involved do you get with programming the click in a song that your producing, eg speeding up/slowing down/tempo changes ect. Do you do this in conjuntion with the band or just do your own thing? Ive started to get pretty anal with this lately so wondering how you go about this?

I love these kind of fly on the wall videos, wicked! :Smokin:

I love the line, "James kicked our ass." ...... I know exactly what they mean! :)
one of the things they put the most initial resistance to was moving to heavier gauge strings and thicker picks... they tune quite low and were using 10-46 and flimsy picks... i brought them up to 12-52 and heavier picks. they love it now that they are used to it, and agree that it has improved their tone, tuning stability, and even their playing.

getting them on a click, cracking down on sloppy technique, and rooting out all the note/key clashes and the like make up the rest of what they mean by that, i'm sure. they have been very responsive though, and willing to do the work and try all my suggestions.... pleasure to work with guys like this.

It's great that they were receptive. They seem genuinely grateful to you for improving them as players. I think that's where a lot of gratification behind production really kicks in - to show people what they're capable of.

Speaking of heavier strings, I recently put an 0.70 on my low Bb string and it's really tightened up the pitch fluctuation. My Jazz III has a bit of a hard time scooping at it, but I'm still getting used to things, haha. It's amazing that most pre-packaged 7-string sets only go down to like .56 or so. The tension from low to high tends to be so uneven, and perhaps gives less knowledgeable players the wrong idea about what's ideal to use.

Now you see why I spend so much time offering to help forum members get balanced string sets?

Anyway, try Tortex Sharpies, or maybe filing down some Nylons, to get that clean Jazz III feel with a bit more room to grab at the 70.

Jeff

I use the Green Tortex, but I'm thinking of trying the the sharp version. Maybe I'll pick some up today. From what I hear, they'll make my attack more accurate?

That's what I'd say. Get a few different gauges, as they'll feel a lot different and you want to find something that isn't too soft to negate the benefits of the sharp point or so hard that you can't attack things right with them.

Cool. Thanks Jeff.

Or try Jazz 3 XL's. It's how I roll.
