In a brand new interview with CBS News, legendary rocker Sammy Hagar (CHICKENFOOT, VAN HALEN, MONTROSE) spoke aboout first-ever rock collaborations album, "Sammy Hagar & Friends", and his time with VAN HALEN, which he fronted from 1985 to 1996."It seems like so long ago, but at the same time it's such a big part of me," Hagar said of his VAN HALEN sting. "If I had never done that, this record that I just did, 'Sammy Hagar & Friends', would sound different if I had never been in VAN HALEN. "Everything I've ever done has made me what I am today. But fronting a band like VAN HALEN, I don't know… It seems like it was so right at the time, but today it doesn't quite fit in my lifestyle and my world. I don't know why. But, you know, I think about that. I like the way I fit in CHICKENFOOT. We have a different kind of thing. I like being new. I really do. I just gotta say it. I love being new. I'd rather do a record like this."Hagar added that his time in VAN HALEN was "wonderful.""I will play 'Right Now' and 'Finish What You Started', 'Why Can't This Be Love', 'Dreams' for the rest of my life," he said. "There's no question about it. I will play those songs for the rest of my life. There are a lot of songs that I won't. But those songs will be played for the rest of my life because they were great, great, great. I like keeping those in my back pocket."Among the high-profile guest performers and/or writers on "Sammy Hagar & Friends" are Hagar's CHICKENFOOT bandmates Michael Anthony, Chad Smith, and Joe Satriani, along with Kid Rock, Ronnie Dunn, JOURNEY's Neal Schon, HEART's Nancy Wilson and various members of MONTROSE. The album will feature covers of BOB SEGER's "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" and DEPECHE MODE's "Personal Jesus".For his new solo set, Sammy Hagar partially revived his early-'80s supergroup with JOURNEY's Neal Schon, with the addition of his CHICKENFOOT bandmates Michael Anthony and Chad Smith.
