I thought I didn't like Iced Earth.....but then

Barlow came out and the triplets started flowing and holy shit the right hand was surging.

It was awesome. That is all. I'm now a believer.

'Dark Saga' and the first 'Something Wicked...' are brilliant albums. I'll be honest though, (and against popular opinion) I really haven't enjoyed the last few albums. Didn't mind Horror Show, but it didn't grab me like Saga or Wicked). I thought the most recent Something Wicked (with Ripper Owens) was rubbish, which was a shame cos I was really looking forward to the continuation it. Haven't heard them with Matt Barlow back in the fold, but I thought he was a prefect metal vocalist, similar to Russell Allan from Symphony X.

When I was younger I was the biggest Iced Earth fan and they're still one of my biggest influences on guitar playing... I believe up to Dark Saga the band was awesome. Night of the stormrider and Burnt offerings are definitely their best albums. From the first something wicked album they started declining and after horror show they turned into crap and I hate Owens. Unfortunately now that matt barlow is back they still suck.

The first time I heard IE in 2006 on Something Wicked and Horror Show I was hooked. Then I got Night of the Stormrider, Dark Saga, Alive and Athens and Burnt Offerings, and all blew me away one by one. To be honest, this year my interest as of late last year has somewhat waned because it is all too obvious that Schaffer nowadays is trying to cover any lack of creativity with those infamous irksome midpaced riffs. I don't know why, but on old slower tracks like Melancholy and Blessed Are You, it worked so much better than on Overture of the Wicked, Framing Armageddon and Crucible of Man, perhaps because the fantastic vocal melodies take the focus off the guitar parts.

...Still, Schaffer has one hell of a picking hand, perhaps the tightest in the business.

Yeah, I really can't get into Iced Earth, the modern take on classic Maiden-esque metal just doesn't do much for me
