safe but not far from the city
a thread for lyrics whose meaning we never understood and - hopefully - people's opinions as to what they actually mean.
if possible, please don't just write "general" comments but also address specific lines to prove you're not merely creative, but smart too. :p

here's one from me:
d:a:d - a hand without strength said:
An empty plate for love & hate, so hungry like they never ate
And if you fight, noone fights back - 200 killings
Now I know that death is wearing black
A hand that holds me without strength - a hand that touches me without weight

The troops of love are flying out - very angry, very loud
- You can see it from the air - when you get hit,
You don't know where, and nothings seems fair
A hand that holds me without strength a hand that touches me without weight

And with no flag left to defend - a hand that pushes me
Anything as long as you touch me - Touch me - touch me - touch me

erm... if I start dissecting the lyrics, it will be a monster posting :D which keeps everyone away from really reading it

not everyone, i'm sure. certainly not me. :) i'm sure a few others won't mind: they have their eating & picture threads to increase their postcount. ;)

oki, let me start somewhere.... gonna keep it short

>>An empty plate for love & hate, so hungry like they never ate
love and hate are put into concrete terms here; both need to be fed (like an animal or human needs to be); but they're both starving (as a human would say)

>>if you fight, noone fights back - 200 killings
Now I know that death is wearing black
A hand that holds me without strength - a hand that touches me without weight

the power/mightiness of death is described here: no use to fight death because it (death) will get you anyway; so it doesn't need to defend itself. it doesn't need to show any kind of strength because once death has "caught" you, you are inevitably and irreversibly taken out of life.

>>The troops of love are flying out - very angry, very loud
meaning, that love demands to be recognized, to be taken serious (again a personification of an actually abstract term - "troops of love")

>> - You can see it from the air - when you get hit,
You don't know where, and nothings seems fair

well, here's a little mix of Eros' (errant) arrows and the fact that love is found unfair by ppl., especially when the beloved one doesn't reply to the other one's feelings.

>>A hand that holds me without strength a hand that touches me without weight
here you can either take it as death again or take it as love. they have the same power and features, it could mean.

>>And with no flag left to defend - a hand that pushes me
Anything as long as you touch me - Touch me - touch me - touch me

I'd have to hear the song now.... cos this line is not easy to decide whether it's meant as giving in to death or giving in to that other one.

@opi: i found the second snippet particularly insightful, thank you. :)
as for the first one, don't you think it's implying that there is a lack of any sort of feeling, or apathy about?
i'll listen to the song a couple of times - i can send it to you if you want - then discuss the rest in depth.

what i fail to catch in this song is the overall meaning. the lines are rather simple and apparently not very cryptic. yet i'm not sure exactly how metaphoric each verse is supposed to be... namely, whether the most down-to-earth references are for real (i'm referring to the killings, the troops, the air, the fighting) or hint at something else.

An empty plate for love & hate, so hungry like they never ate

people are starving for strong emotions and begging for them. can't make much more out of this.

And if you fight, noone fights back

what are you supposed to fight? let's say this is metaphoric: it might mean that the lack of strong feelings implies if you try to conjure up some - by being aggressive - this still doesn't get you any reaction. everyone is completely apathetic.

200 killings - Now I know that death is wearing black

uh... why? what does black have to with anything? and the killings?
i suppose it ought to refer to something that's happened somewhere, but it strikes me as odd anyway: didn't it say that there was no reaction? so who did the killings?

now i stop otherwise this post gets too long and people run away in fear.

I agree with rahvin on the first verses:

200 killings - Now I know that death is wearing black

This one I would interpret to mean that the lack of strong emotions applies only to the writer, as the rest of the world seems to get their slice of "strong emotions", thus there are those who have been "killed by love". And the death is wearing black could be kind of like "I know what love is but have never felt it".

The troops of love are flying out - very angry, very loud
- You can see it from the air - when you get hit,
You don't know where, and nothings seems fair

The second paragraph supports this interpretation: it says that love does exist but its victims
seem to be anyone else but you.

A hand that holds me without strength - a hand that touches me without weight

This says we all crave for love ("the hand that holds me"), but just can't find it anywhere
("--without strength").

Damn, I'm going to be late from school unless I hurry, so I'll be back afterwards...

but it's
And if you fight, noone fights back - 200 killings
Now I know that death is wearing black

the "now i know..." is seperated from the 200 killings and is perhaps only to indicate a transition from the fighting theme to the death-theme (like stating a "fact" and then describing it: "A hand that holds me without strength - a hand that touches me without weight" )

the overall meaning is quite cryptic, yes :D I cannot clearly say whether one time it's about death and the other about love.
I suspect that the intention of this song is to show the similarity of strong emotions (whatever nomenclature they may have).

you can't be aware of it yet, but the way it's sung, 200 killings is as far apart from the previous line as is from the next. if i were to type the lyrics out, i would go:
and if you fight
noone fights back
200 killings...
now i know that death is wearing black

but you'll know soon enough. ;)

funny, at the beginning i didn't think the discussion for this song would focus so much on love. :err:

Damn, you're right. What about this:

And if you fight - if you love
no one fights back - no one loves you back
200 killings - all your attempts to be loved back have failed. Love has been killed ~200 times.

And to make the whole thing a little less love-related, feel free to replace the word "love"
with the words "strong emotions". There, better? :p

Walk the streets, what do I see
Shit on legs approaching me
Alright I really want it
Oh yeah I gotta have it
Come on baby and dance again
Jerk that head and be my friend
Merging Zeus and Spartacus
In rendezvous with anus
B.O.S. Buns of steel
Spandex ass to make me kneel
Gonna give you electric shock
gonna give you electric rock
Looking good and feeling clean
Classic buttocks on the scene
Cars go by they're out of luck
Eyeball ass - eyeball stuck!
