The method was not very thorough and scientifically accurate and the conditions were less than ideal but here it is. I am not a drummer!

MK012 oktavamod, NT5 stock and "roadster" Oktavamod and T-bone sc140 (cause you always need a banana for scale) tested as mono overhead.

Hopefully some of you will find this useful.

thanks for the comparison!
difficult to judge... as you write in your sig "context is everything": i'd like to hear them all in a full mix to see how they fit ;)

mic2 stands out in a bad way imho, piercing hi-end. thats what i connect with cheap SDCs so i guess its the t-bone.
mic3 NT5, 1&4 oktavas, this would be my guess.
liked mic 4 the most in solo, but mic1 is nice too.

thanks!

Thanx for doing this!

Hmmm... hard to say for me... they were all pretty similar to my ears. I probably could live with each of those equally.
Still, I liked mic4 the best. It sounded most "expensive" without any frequencies that peak out.
Then I liked mic1 the least.
I cannot tell mic2 and 3 apart.

I dare to say that mic4 is the Rode NT5, as I pick almost 100% a Rode as the best sounding mic for me in these kind of shootouts :).

And €99 for a pair of the T.Bone's? If one of the clips is a T.Bone, it gets high up on my shopping list, as I don't have a pair of SDC's and it will take awhile until I get the money for the KM184's.

4 votes including mine for turtles! Success! :Smug:

Should I name the mics then?

I'll wait until tomorrow... The blind test is just for shits and giggles but I'm interested in people's opinion. I know mono overhead isn't super exciting, maybe I'll put them on snare too.

So 1 is the stock NT5, 2 is the Roadster NT5, 3 is the T-bone and 4 is the MK012 oktavamod.

I agree the roadster is kind of bright in a not-so flattering way but I'm sure it will cut through nicely in the right context (the same complaint is often made about the KM184 versus the KM84).

I also liked the MK012 the most. It just sounds lush and smooth to my ears.

I'd say the strange grainy mid range and nasty transients are what gives away the T-bone. That being said, it's certainly a bang for the buck if you are broke. I would never use it over any of the other contenders though.

The stock NT5 is not bad. I like how it picked the snare but it lacks something. I'm probably biased, knowing the answer from the beginning.
