Well, the rock n roll bad boy who likes to throw bottles at fans and threaten to kill police officers is set to play the ultimate rebel - Jesus!

Yep, he's going to take the lead role in a touring production of Jesus Christ Superstar after the success of Jekyll & Hyde on Broadway. I'd actually be quite interested in seeing this!

"Jesus Christ, superstar, looks like a woman and he wears a bra..."

Pain of Salvation are doing a production of Jesus Christ Superstar in their home town. They are the live band doing all the music and shit.

There is only 1 true Jesus Christ. Ian Gillan. Deep Purples voice was the original JC, and I have the record. He sounds fuckin amazing on that production!!

Actually Spruce, he wasn't. He was an early one, and the best known, but he wasn't the original. I forget who was, but I've got the original original cast recording at home. As well as the Ian Gillan version.

And John Farnham was good as well.

Ian Gillan was the original Jesus Christ Superstar. I am prepared to gamble on this!
Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber contacted Ian Gillan, and he got the nod ahead of Robert Plant. Webber and Rice heard Gillan's screams in Child in Time, and thought he would be perfect for the part. He did not act in the stageshow or the movie, but he was the first person to sing the part of Jesus, and he did so on the recording.
I think Ted Neely was Gillan's replacement for the movie, but Gillan's performance shittede all over his.
Webber and Rice wanted Gillan to be in the movie, because he had the right look and the right voice, but Gillan had to decline because he had only just joined Purple and wanted to focus on In Rock.
