SECRET OYSTER

CEREBUS EFFECT

Join us as we present our own "Pre-ProgDay" show, featuring this year's ProdDay headlining band, SECRET OYSTER! Local trio CEREBUS EFFET will open the show with a short set of wake-yer-ass-up crunchy fusion.

SECRET OYSTER

Fans of classic progressive fusion will surely enjoy this legendary Danish quintet. Forming in 1972, SECRET OYSTER became one of the foremost fusion ensembles to emerge out of Europe in the 1970s. The band recorded four albums between 1973 and 1976, all of which garnered much critical acclaim. The band were signed to CBS records, who distributed their records world-wide. I can even recall our local progressive rock radio station (WLAV-FM in Grand Rapids) playing cuts from their albums back in the mid-'70s. During that time SECRET OYSTER performed over 500 shows, including a British tour with Captain Beefheart. They had a strong following throughout Europe, and played before crowds as large as 30,000 people.

In 1977, for a variety of reasons, the band decided to call it a day and the individual musicians moved on to other projects. For one thing, CBS records, who had plans for SECRET OYSTER to be their "next big effort" after Weather Report, decided they were sylistically too similar and withdrew their support. They played what was supposed to be their final show in 1977.

In 2006 The Laser's Edge Records rectified a decades old oversight and the recordings of SECRET OYSTER were finally available on CD for the first time. Renewed interest in the band led to an invitation from NEARfest to perform in 2007. Though they had not played together in over 30 years, they accepted the offer, and SECRET OYSTER reunited to perform for their first time in the US. The show was released on CD last year as "Live In The US 2007."

Since then the band has been busy performing concerts overseas. Earlier this year, ProgDay announced they would bring this legendary band back to the US for what will surely be a performance to be remembered. When the band's travel plans made it evident they could do a show here at Orion just before ProgDay, we jumped at the opportunity and are extremely pelased to be able to offer local music fans the chance to experience SECRET OYSTER!

CEREBUS EFFECT:
CEREBUS EFFECT are no strangers to the Orion Stage, having played here a number of times over the past five years or so. "Metallic, jackhammer riffing, acrobatic jamming, joined-at-the-hp-attack crunch with brains" - sez their website, which is a pretty apt description. This installment will feature a leaner, meaner trio arrangement with Pat Gaffney on drums, Mike Gallway on bass, and Joe Walker on guitar. Their music conveys a wide array of harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic counterpoint, and features a balance mix of structure and improvisational jams.
