Sedition - Arcane Secrets
INDEPENDENT - 2001
By Van Alan

Sedition is a relatively new band from Brisbane, Australia; they have only been around since March of 1999. However, their latest CD entitled "Arcane Secrets" shows they are not content when it comes to sitting around and doing nothing, they want to get out there and make music! And, making music is what they did. Showcasing strong power and traditional metal influences, Sedition mixes it up with 8 songs in the 80’s tradition. Thrash influences also creep into the Sedition assault through the electric-driven guitar and bass riffs.
The opening track, "Descent", is a brief keyboard instrumental leading into the thrash prone "Dark Half". Judd Newton (vocals) has an unrivaled voice accenting the music; he gives the band their vigorous sound with his power/traditional metal tones. The music hints at their Iron Maiden and Judas Priest influences, however Sedition construct a sound all their own. "Absolute Power" and "The Final Sign" are the highlights on the CD, the first is a melodic anti-war thrasher and the second is an apocalyptic tribute to the Second Coming!

Does "Arcane Secrets" include any bad songs? Well, maybe "Beast Within", the lyrics remind me of Metallica’s "Of Wolf And Man", and the song sounds uninspired. Also, "Army of Darkness" is an attempt at an evil hymn, and even though it’s acceptable the track is overshadowed by the more melodic, and memorable, side of Sedition. But, other than that this is a solid first release. This isn’t a flawless CD, but it’s what you would expect, and it sounds better than a demo. There is also a good bonus track from the bands ’99 promo release, and even though the production is lacking on the bonus track, it’s a worthy addition!

Live, the band plays Iron Maiden, Metallica, Queensryche, Metal Church, and other cover songs from Bay Area thrash bands. If you want a melodic power/traditional metal band with slight thrash overtones, Sedition delivers. The group consists of Sinclair Newey (Guitars/Keyboards), Simon Kelly (guitars), Judd Newton (Vocals), Tyrrell Beck (drums) and Bruce Vines (bass).
