Seeking Guidance on Legal issues of Covers Royalties, Movie Samples, etc..

My band has two CDs coming out. One's for sale with all original material, and the other is mixture of originals and covers we will give out for free as a sample of our style and songwritting. We won't have to pay royalties for the covers if we give out the songs for free, right?
Also, we used an audio sample of a movie dialog between two actors lasting less than 20 seconds, interwoven with one of our songs (also for free). I'm thinkig, if rap stars can do it, so can metal heads, right?

As long as you don't make money off of it you're fine. Even if you make a little bit of money you can claim it as a hobby and be fine. Royalties imply you making money off of others' work.
