Sept 11 ?

Anyone else feeling a bit bummed out today, due to the obvious. I dont MEAN to labour on it the Media is doing that for us. I was pleasantly surprised to see 19 out of 20 cars with headlights on at 8:47 this morning... sigh....

Im kind of a bit sick of it, its all too much, it was a very horrible day and I dont need to hear people crying on the radio and interviews with the victims all day, along with newspapers and so on. Its everywhere. Its hardly something any of us are ever going to forget, so I dont know why the media feels the need to use it to gain ratings and sell magazines. The newspaper here even has a special pullout section with poster sized "commemerative edition" images of the towers falling down and exploding etc.

Yes I'm bummed. Tomorrow is 12 months since Ansett got put uder administration. Saturday is 12 months since we collapsed first time round.

But as for the New York thing? I'm more bummed that there's no commemorative edition papers for the millions of non-americans killed in non-western coutries by floods, famine and other disasters, both natural and ... ummm ... not .. natural.

I'm not turning on the TV or radio today. We all lived through it the first time and that was more than enough. I resent the media milking a tragedy like this for all it's worth and telling us all how we're supposed to feel. Yes it *was* a terrible event, but for those of us left behind, life has to go on.

That said, I'll be playing New York Groove and Ghost of Freedom at some point during the day .

But I think they way in which it happened is why its remembered so much, not because its America, floods and famine have happened all through time, this was a real shock when it happened.
(I dont mean to devalue anyones life just because they werent dying from something that is memorable, I hope you know what I mean)

Planes flying into buildings live on tv are different though, forget that it happened in America, no matter where it was, watching people leap from 80 floors up because of the fires isnt something people forget, whereas when you see a car bomb, its happened and all you see is a burnt out car.
Images like what we saw were a once in a lifetime "event", whereas another bombing in Israel just makes us shake our heads and wonder what they are thinking because it happens so often.

(I do see what you mean, making a big deal about September 11 and yet forgetting that millions of people have died horrible deaths, but because it wasnt on tv noone cares is sadly the way of things these days, I was just trying to point out WHY its remembered above the other stuff, thats all )

Indeed... 40,000 people die every day from poverty-related causes such as disease and starvation. That's 10 times the number of people who died in the WTC attacks, 365 days a year! And we can't just go in and bomb the fuck out of poverty.

I hate to get into a political debate here, but I actually think the amount of publicity it's received is purely because it is America that it happened to... I watched the memorial thing last night too & it sent shivers down my spine - my heart goes out to the 'innocent' victims of the WTC attack - but what about the 200 000 people that have died from terrorist attacks in Kenya alone? That's two HUNDRED thousand people, people!

I think September 11 is a day to reflect on all the terrible things which have lead to the world being so full of hate & vengeance.....

we saw those guys getting killed on our TV screens and we were too gutless to send in our army till it was all over!!
I don't see any bullshit 24 hour tv coverage on the anniversary of that.

Although i also agree that sep 11 is somthing that the world has never seen. And the fact is, it affects us in a huge way because without the protection of the US we would be sitting ducks for anyone! the bloody indonesian army outnumber ours 10 men to 1

If Indonesia wanted to invade Australia, they would over run this country in less than 24 hours. The USA would be powerless to stop them; indeed, it would be interesting to see what America would do in that situation.

But where do you draw the line though Gav? Would you be willing to go over there and die for a civil war you have nothing to do with?

You have to remember our soldiers all have families too, I know you shouldnt just turn a blind eye, but sending soldiers to die there is another thing altogether.

Horrible things happen in the world, try as we might, we cant stop them all, no matter what we do, people will die from starvation, bombings, civil war, no medical help, disease etc. The only way to stop it is to erase humans from the planet unfortunately

I don't usually bother getting into political discussions cos very rarely do people change their mind about such things, but having read the Iraq thread a few days ago and now this one has left me with no doubt some people like to jump on the "bash the US" bandwagon.

When I drove into uni this morning I drove through the city and saw the Australian Flag at half mast and I looked at the tall buildings and thought as I did a year ago "imagine if that happened here" ...and I genuinely got quite choked up about it. Who fucking cares if it took place in America? It's not about America... it's about freedom and the ability to live in a civilised world. Just think about what if this had happened in your city and how it would affect you.

Sure people die all the time from poverty and natural disasters and I don't think those people are any less important than the people who died in the attacks on the US. But it's the WAY that they died that makes it significant.

Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein... or any of those loonies... are all threats to the freedom of the civilised world and I personally have no problem if the US wants to wage war on them. Do you think the Jews of Europe were so laid back as you guys in the late 1930's?? "Oh yeah, that Hitler guy is bad but he is in Germany. Here in Poland I'll be safe from him"

As much as it was an awful thing to have happened, I think it made for absolutely spectacular television and I'm glad it's being televised again for the world to see. We love to see that sort of stuff on TV - who doesn't go "Ooooh!" when a plane goes down at an air show, or there's a spectacular car crash at the Grand Prix and the like? As humans there's part of us that loves to see destruction on TV, as long as we're not reminded of how many people died. I'm sure not many will agree with me, though.

I saw "The Sum of All Fears" today, and I can see why some people were wary of it when it was released. I didn't realise until halfway through that I saw it on 11/9 (what's all this 9/11 rubbish, anyway? We're not American, we don't put the month before the day when we write the date!).
