I think they're the special editions, however.

Haha.

I have the VHS special editions and haven't watched them for years, so probably not. I have those movies pretty much memorized now anyhow, and every time I watch them it seems the acting gets worse somehow. The Lord of the Rings trilogy really did ruin anything remotely subpar in the fantasy / sci-fi field.

EDIT: Note I said REMOTELY subpar, Star Wars kicks ass, but the acting always bit the big one.

They are the special editions, and there was talk at one point that they were redone yet again with some of the f/x cleaned up and a 5.1 mix, but I have no idea if that is true. Lucas said that he has no intention of releasing the original cuts on DVD. Friggin lame, IMO. If Greedo shot first, then the movies ended there. No way in hell he missed from 3 feet away. Besides that and the uber-lame Jabba scenes in Empire Strikes Back, I enjoyed the special editions.

That said, I will be getting these. Special Edition is better than no edition, and I don't own a VCR or Laser Disc player.

Oh yeah, concerning the special edition crap:

jabba scenes in ESB? it was some time i last watched them but it's the first movie (IV) which has that horrible scene where han solo meets a computer animated jabba or? hm, now i'm gettng uncertain :err:

anyway i think the special editions turned out pretty well, i didn't bother me that much except the scene i mentioned and perhaps that poorly animated sand monster in RotJ, but i'll definately get that box

The only real problem I had with the special editions was that they made Tantooine way too overpopulated in the town. I liked the desolation in the original - much more like a desert.

ESB was probably the best looking one - especially that Cloud City.

Lucas said that he has no intention of releasing the original cuts on DVD.

he's just saying that now so you'll buy these ones, then he'll release the others 10 years from now and that way he'll be able to get MORE money from us.

Lucas is a bastard, he can keep re-releasing star wars and people will buy it, ensuring he will have a source of income until he day he dies.

I think the worst example is the DVD market. Honestly, I think almost every movie ever released on DVD has been released twice now at two separate occasions. The 'special edition' always contains some further commentary or bonus scenes, and nothing much more. What's worse is that they do this to genre fans. I don't give a fuck about hollywood blockbuster movies, but when it comes to low key movies (such as Dawn of the Dead or Army of Darkness), I want one fucking definitive version.

It's is pure bullshit. AT least with LotR, Peter Jackson announced up front that their would be two versions of each flick, just so not to 'surprise' the fans.

(btw, I already have the Star Wars trilogy on DVD - ripped from the VHS versions out in Thailand. Cost me $5. Spending money on Lucas these days is like spending money on Metallica).

I so rarely watch the special features I don't bother with boner editions anymore. The only ones I watch (repeatedly) are Kevin Smith films, even Lord of the Rings I don't play with the special features, but they were worth it for the extended versions of the movies (OMG HTYEY SOMEHOW MAED THEM BETTAR!!!1111111).

I agree.

Thing is, if they're going to make two different editions - one 'deluxe' and one 'standard' - then I want to be able to exercise my right to choose at the time of purchase. There are some films where I may want to pay the extra $10 to get the deluxe special edition, for example, but they are cheating us by releasing them separately.

If the special edition takes more time to compile, they should announce ahead of time that another version will be available later, just as they did with LotR. Nowaday, I just assume that every DVD will be re-released as a 'special directors cut' or 'unrated version' six months down the line.

Also, if I go to the video store, I cannot choose to rent "Badder Santa" or "Euro Trip - Uncut Edition'? What is up with that? These are not for rental, but for purchase only. You can only rent the 'censored' versions, so to make more money, they slap a big "UNCUT" sticker on top of the DVD to entice people to buy them instead of rent because tehy have teh flashh off teh b00bies!! OMG!

Someone drop a bomb on the US movie marketing industry please.
