Should we get Nukes ?

Power Stations I mean.

I've been looking at what we burn at work, the NSW energy directions paper, Greenhouse effect, how little energy we can get out of renewables (although they play a big part). We burn (where I work...about 20% of NSW power), we burn coal at the rate of about 5 Olympic pools per day, and produce a pool full of ash.

I've concluded that we need Nukes. And for safety, we don't want private industry (or state owned corporations) running them.

I don't understand why we just don't cover our massively vast unused centre with solar panels.

Nuclear power is the way to go, stick it in the desert too, so if it does go bang, it'll only kill a couple of rabbits and roos.

Koich, I thought that you would like a few river spills.

Double the chances of getting a bite if you get my drift.

The big Solar chimney is a promising technology that will help (particularly Australia)

we should geneate power by making fat people walk on treadmills, thus solving 2 problems at once.

That's actually not that bad an idea. All the potential energy those treadmills and exercise bikes are creating is just going to waste. People would start wanting rebates for going to the gym though.

A guy who just retired from work had an exercise bike hooked up to a generator, hooked up to a tv.

His kids were allowed to watch as much TV as they wanted to.

I worked for Stanwell Corporation, who make those big windmills and other renewable energy wotsits, for three weeks back in 2002, so I feel I'm more than qualified to talk about this sort of thing.

Ask any questions you may have, guys and gals.

Spiff,
how many Blayney wind farms would it take to run a single feed pump at Wallerawang Power Station ?

(more importantly, how many top fuel dragsters would it take to do the same ?)

A nuclear generator would be good. Put in the gardens of Kirribilli House, and store the waste there as well.

I'm all for it... but like other have stated before, where would we put it? It would have to be close enough to a population centre to make full use of it but it would have to be far enough away that IF something was to go wrong, the resulting disaster could be contained.

I'm for it too. I say we pick one of thoose remote towns that is dying because the nearby mine/quarry/local industry has dried up and give them a reactor. It'd keep the town alive, bring jobs to the community, and more than likely most of the infrastructure is already there (although it might need a bit of upgrading, which would be another bonus).

I also like the solar chimney idea, particularly if it's the idea that I'm thinking of and I haven't got it mixed up with something else.

The chimney is the kilometre tall one scheduled for Mildura(?).

With high voltage transmission, you can put them reasonably well anywhere, and with dry cooling (no cooling towers or water needed) as a serious option now we can further increase the number of places to put one.

If Sydney is seriously looking at deslination, then they have to build a new power station.
