A “dark pop experience” is how Silvery describe themselves. This seems fairly accurate to me – there are goth-rock leanings, definite trip-hop elements, synth-pop moments and the slightest hint of some new wave. Throughout is a melancholy vein that will undoubtedly please goth listeners. Programmed, prominent drums show the strongest trip-hop influence, while also being reminiscent of pop-industrial at times. Above this synths draw further parallels with the more acceptable side of harsh electronica, yet sometimes use strings to give the music a dramatic, emotional feel. The female vocals are sung, drawing some parallels with nameless female fronted nu-metal bands (well, not that one, I was thinking The Pornorphans, so ner). Lightly distorted guitars give the music a heavier edge, while prominent bass is solid, showing definite new-waveisms at times. The production is of a high standard, with a crystal clear sound and well balanced mix.

An interesting concoction of styles, Silvery’s music is good fun. Very listenable, it is also, unfortunately, very forgettable. Lacking in originality, the songs are well written, yet lack the depth of some emotionally charged music – at times it can feel forced. The tracks can also feel samey as one merges into another over the course of an album. That said, if you like one, you’ll like them all. Fans of goth and “dark pop” in general are likely to enjoy this, as the mood and atmosphere are effective and pervasive. Black Box[/B] comes with a cautious recommendation for such listeners.
