I can hardly think of any, especially for their newer phase. but I used to see them in the same category as Katatonia (early Doom Metal - "alternative rock/metal" later on)

Quite comparable to their not-so-new stuff would be Germany's DISILLUSION, which are coincidentially performing their masterpiece BACK TO TIMES OF SPLENDOR on 29 May in Vienna, Austria at Viper Room

The key with later Anathema and trouble with finding similar artists is often because people aren't aware of their prominent post-rock influence (WHBWH and Weather Systems in particular). You could try Sólstafir's album Ótta, if you don't mind the Icelandic language. Or later Alcest.

There's a lot, but yeah, you have to get into post-rock and electro-folk music.

yeah, I love WHBWH deeply. solstafir were great last year at their show in the Austrian alps, they played 2 hours and performed quite a lot from Köld.
