Ska + Metal

the closest that I know of is ska-core which defined the middle era of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Albums like "Don't Know How to Party", "Question the Answers" and "Ska-Core, the Devil and More" kind of defined their unique mixture of ska and early hardcore music. They also did a number of punk and metal covers.

I heard a band that tried it. Some random little unsigned band. They were shit.

Haha that's my girlfriend's favorite band. She's a Ska elitist to the degree I'm a Metal elitist. I was just wondering if there was any way the two could be reconciled.

What Metal songs did they cover?

While not ska or metal, Oingo Boingo were musical geniuses and fused punk, new wave and horns. At times they are reminiscent of ska, but never do they really sustain a ska style. Check out Nothing to Fear for a more raw and unique experience, or Good For Your Soul for a more accessible experience.

There was a band in the Christian music scene called Five Iron Frenzy. I guess they were formed out of the remains of a underground Thrash band called Exhumator. I don't know much about this band in either configuration. I don't know how much they carried their metal over into FIF. I do know one of their sings starts out with a Metallica riff, and then turns into ska.

The Bosstones are awesome.

What Metal songs did they cover?

They were the first band I really got into and are still one of my favorite bands. They've covered "Enter Sandman", "Ain't Talkin Bout Love" (Van Halen), and "Detroit Rock City"...as for punk songs, they've covered Minor Threat, Angry Samoans, SSD and a few others I can't think of at the moment.

that's interesting though your girlfriend is a ska elitist and likes the bosstones best...most ska elitists I know scoff at them. whatever.

on a side note, Five Iron Frenzy wrote one of the most ridiculous/hysterical songs I've ever heard: "These are not my pants" and did several different genre versions of said song. good band

...I should note that ska was the music I was into prior to metal

Haha, I was going to say the same thing. I've always viewed them as more of a "gateway" band in a Lamb of God or Dimmu sort of way.
