SM7B

How much gain does this mic need?

it´s funny because i´m messing around with my sm7b for the first time and was asking myself the exact same question.

Only with full gain on the pre-amp does it work.

rather strange...

I could be wrong, but I believe that the newer SM7's have a little more gain than the older ones, as it was a source of many complaints a few years ago for Shure. The gain is still real low, but it's useable on both models, so it shouldn't really matter.

The newer ones have improved mounting hardware and a humbucking coil added. I've heard they have slightly more gain, though Shure doesn't claim they're supposed to. I'm planning on getting a SM7b as soon as I upgrade my preamps.

I have an other question about the SM7B. I got mine a few days ago (finally!) and I will most certainly use it on my next recording. I used it when I did a production on USA earlier this year and fell in love with it completely.

Anyway, what I'm wondering about is the switch part. For you who use this mic: how do you usually put the switches when recording vocals? AFAIK I used the low-cut on the recording I did before, but the flat mid.

Another question: Do you use it on more than vocals? I'm curious to try it on snare and guitar too, is that a good idea? Same question in that case, how would you put the switches in that case?

I used an SM7 on a recent session and loved it, although you do need an extremely clean preamp with a lot of gain to get the best from it (the RNP works great with it, although I've gotten a great sound out of my Yamaha MG series mixers preamps in the past).
