It's just a mono compatibility thing.

I've never found it to bring anything useful in the stereo field.

It even tend to make the mixes thing slightly narrower.

However, it prevents the mix to collapse in mono.

That is all.

I've noticed that too, about the narrow mix. To the point where I had to run compressors in dual mono to fix the collapsing of the stereo field. it's just as bad when rendering to joint stereo mp3.
