I recently bought a late 80’s Soldano X88R Preamplifier out of pure luck (there aren’t many of these around). Nevertheless, I didn’t expect much (essentially because the lead channel lacks gain), but surprisingly this unit -coupled with a Mesa Boogie SimulClass 2:90 and some stuff- produced some killer tones.

Chain is: TS808 -> Soldano X88R -> Furman PQ4 -> Mesa Boogie Simul-Class 2:90 -> Mesa Boogie Traditional 412 -> (one) SM57

Tell me what you think.

pretty kick ass for such an old preamp, i remember checking ebay and being all about them about 5 years ago, first time ive ever heard one recorded well though. Awsome job, and cool preamp

I'm yet to test the SLO100, but then again, the preamp section of this unit is almost identical to SLO100's.

Sounds really good! The tone has a really unique character, I can't put my finger on what it is though...

Anyone interested in the no-furmanpq4-version? It's amazing how this eq absolutely changes the nature of the sound.
