Some Dirty as fuck Brutal Death Metal

DanLights

Santa Hat Forever
I think this is pretty much a final mix, but I'm exhausted so I could use some extra ears to make sure everything is in order here. It's supposed to be dirty/grindcoreish so the loud clicky kick, poppy snare and boomy guitars are kinda intentional (devourment style muthafuckas). Guitar and bass were recorded through POD X3 live with tones crafted by the band itself and I'm only mixing so I did what I could although I like the way it's turning out (not even DI of bass was provided, just two processed tones).

So tell me what you think!

This song is re-recorded from a previous demo the band selfproduced, you can listen to the early (current?) version and check the band here: http://www.myspace.com/525267539

Love the bass tone for this style. Super quacky and dirty! Could be just a bit more buried though, the 1-2kHz grind is a bit too apparent at times for my liking. The snare has the machine gun effect going on here and there, but with material like this it's always a challenge.

Good job overall! :)

Good one. Guitars and vox a bit loud in some parts are causing the lack of glue IMO and yes, snare machine gun in one fill and in the last blast.

Music sounds cool. But I agree with Morgan C, where's the bass in the mix? It can't sound like it's going to kill you if it ain't got no lows.

not on monitors right now, but first impression:

- vocals could come up a bit
- guitars need to be more in your face, whereas bass is too loud for that style. i know what you're going for here but with brutal death it's all about the guitars, the bass is just filling out the lows and provides some high end clank.
- ease off the masterbus compression.
- i'm not going to comment on the lows because i'm not on monitors
- wtf is up with the drums? blast sections sound really weird to me.

check out abominable putridity for another reference band. i know, their mix isn't pretty by any audiophile standards, but it fits the style like a glove - minus the programmed drums, but on the other hand the consistency adds even more impact to the sound.

bumping for a new mix after a couple week´s rest, I took into consideration many of your helpful tips plus some input from the guitarist of the band although those tips weren´t really that useful haha

Also for fun, this is a comparison of the previous demo the band selfproduced and my current mix, mainly cause the guitarist kept comparing my mixes to his, he even said his old mix sounded "fuller" which I can´t seem to understand.

Fragle: I have the AP album, it´s killer, yeah I don´t like the drums but the overall sound is perfect for the genre, I just can´t seem to get that meat in the mids the guitars seem to have in the Ap album

Edit: oh and would you be kind enough to explain the weird thing you hear on the drums? They are machine-gun-ish cause the snare is a single sample, and (you probably noticed of course) they're programmed, but is there anything besides that that you find odd?

Bump with the Final already delivered mix, I feel kinda proud of it and the guitarist was blown away when he heard it so I can sleep knowing I did a good job.

Anyways, for anyone who´s interested here are links to the 5 tracks that compose the Ep, some pretty good music I must say. They are still waiting for the artwork to be finished to "release" it but I´m posting the songs in 320kbps Mp3s for anyone to listen if they feel like it
