sooooooo many troops are dying in iraq

my friend just cycled home but he has to go back!!

i think it's so awesome that our perception is that "so many" troops are dying. compared to every other war ever, we've lost so few. but i think it's cool that we as americans are more conscious of even one life being lost nowadays.

due to things like embedded reporters and the like that can help lessen the detachment of the american people from the dead, and also safety procedures, improved body armour, and better medic stuff that means that thousands of people who would be dead a few decades ago now have managed to survive.

when the nation goes to war, the government should run a channel that shows nothing but uncensored war footage 24-7, with breaks to show every coffin that comes home being shipped into Dover. that would make people think twice about the whole war thing.

it's totally messed up that the government tries to never show coffins / funerals. but bush has a 9/11 coffin in his recent advertisement. wtf is that all about?

and anyway i have never personally experienced a war so i think soooooo many people have died.
also, during vietnam i am sure many people were saying the same exact thing.

yeah but tens of thousands of people died in Vietnam (the conflict started a lot slower, sure, but we also didn't ever successfully take over the country). i think the US is going to leave Iraq in shame before we reach very high into the thousands.

maybe in the future, our kids will be talking about stuff like this because a dozen Americans died during the war with China, or something. that'd be really cool.

the downside to the "more people are surviving" angle is that more people are surviving with serious brain damage, or merely vegetating in comas. And its great that the body count has been so "low" but factor in the thousands of wounded, and suddenly it takes on all the more impact.

also the Army is rapidly running out of potentially deployable units. If this Fallujah thing goes nationwide in a big way, Dubya's Excellent Adventure will turn into something of desperate proportions.

right, Lizard--in fact, this is costing the military a lot MORE, because wounded troops cost more than dead troops.

i saw that Ted Koppel thing--cool, i guess. i do like litanies in religious services, songs, poems, political life (like this), and the like...they're almost mystical. i was watching the Israeli news once after that 30-killed suicide bombing and they did a litany-type report of everyone killed and it was really sad: "Meier Dagan, who was a carpenter. Avi Dichter, who was a crossing guard. Fatima al-Doul, who was a mother." I think they do that after every attack there, maybe?

i wish we'd just leave no so no more people would die. every day we're there someone else gets blown up or something. i do not want my little bro shot.

yes, isn't that what i just said, amanda?

and yes, mindspell, he can. my co-worker believes he will. i personally believe there is about a 25% chance of that happening--that is, it's not LIKELY, but 25% chance is still pretty fucking huge.

tommy franks gave an interview a couple of months ago where he casually mentioned "oh, yeah, the next terrorist attack is definitely going to result in a declaration of martial law. it's okay, we're prepared!"

the cool thing is, if Bush pulls that and can't manage to keep the country under martial law in perpetuity (a possibility, though small), that's huge ammunition to use against the GOP for many years to come!

yes, but Lincoln also faced an entirely internal threat, so the suspension of habeas corpus was more of a logical next step than it would be for Bush (although if he decides to announce that THERE ARE TERRIST CELLS ALL THROUGH AMERICA AND THEY HAVE NOOKYLAR BOMBS that would change things).

in addition, the Madrid election/train bombings will help his rhetoric. i really think there is a very small chance al-Q will not at least TRY to affect our elections with an attack, so his rhetoric will have some basis in truth--which will only serve to make it more cogent, even wrapped in lies and manipulation.
