Pretty wierd, I went to high school with Michael Anderson, one of the astronauts. His brother was my locker mate.

I checked back and Michael was not my locker mate's brother. He was the same age though. Michael did graduate two years before me.

A guy that helps with another website I am involved with lives in Nacogdoches, TX. He heard the explosion, which he initially thought was a thunderstorm or such, and it had a duration of around 20 seconds.

My sympathies and thoughts go out to those affected by this tragedy.

woah, this is too close for comfort, Alan. How sad. This makes #2 for lost shuttles and crew. God bless their souls.:( and all their families, too.

Also, this happened during the same week as the anniversary of the Challenger exploding and one of the Apollo missions where fire swept through the cabin of the capsule.

I had been watching parts of the mission on NASA TV while the astronauts were conducting the experiments.

Yeah, I tripped out when I heard Anderson is from Spokane~ I wondered if you knew him Alan.
What a sad day~ they were 15 minutes away from landing. :(

whats even worse: i heard later on that day that people in texas out walking about randomly found a foot, another found a burnt torso... :Puke:

I'm listening to Howard Stern. Seems someone in Texas or somewhere found, or claimed to have found, pieces of the space shuttle and had put them on E-bay. E-bay, fortunately, took the listing down.

Yeah it has been strange. They have been interviewing his old teachers on TV. All of whom were my teachers too.

From what I've heard, NASA's been cutting the budget on the space shuttle program for years, including the budget for maintenance and repairs. I hate to say this, but I don't think this will be the last time that this happens.

Sadness indeed.... it brings back all those horrible memories from "86".

The poor families... imagine a relative or love one actually works their entire life to become an astronaut... & then they die in a ball of fire. Before the whole world to watch over and over again.

Horrible. Makes all of our minuscule problems seem so petty.

Although I agree with your statement, it should be understood that they would never let it jeopardize safety of flight. The media makes statements like that a lot. Many times the statements are twisted around and easily interpreted the wrong way or taken out of context. That kind of budget cut usually results in fewer flights in order to support lower maintenance/repair costs. Upgrades are usually deferred, etc. I've been working with NASA for years and usually get the inside scoop from them. I've got some recent pics of standing next to Columbia just a few months ago which now have a completely different view. Very sad.
