spin the bottle

Tribute albums are invariably AWFUL, despite a couple of good tracks, thats generally the go.

The only great tribute album is the 2cd Holy Dio one.

Bat Head Soup is pretty good and Humanary Stew is awesome! Both of those were put together by Bob Kulick - so if this Kiss one is anything like those it should be quite nice.
(Maiden tribute coming soon)

Spin The Bottle is the best Kiss tribute on the market probably. It's a good album.

Personally I think the best cover on it is "I Want You", sung by Kip Winger with a rippin' guitar solo by Paul Gilbert, but pretty much every cover on it is strong. No country, alternative, industrial, ska etc like on Kiss My Ass, this tribute album is totally classic sounding hard rock/metal start to finish.

Plus it comes with a free DVD showing some of the artists recording the songs in the studio and talking about how great & important/influencial Kiss are. It's a winner.

Trent, you suck. Kiss my ass is awesome because the singers interpret the songs differently. All the others just replay the songs in whatever the band is covering its style.

Which is fucking lame.

Although I haven't heard it, I'm with Koich. How the band interprets the song is what makes a good tribute. If I wanted to listen to note-for-note renditions of the songs, I'd go listen to the originals.

They aren't note for note like the originals, I just said they are HARD ROCK covers at least.

I'm not saying they have to be the same and I'm not saying bands shouldn't interpret the songs themselves... but I personally am not interested in hearing a ska version of Detroit Rock City.

I think when an artist covers a song for one of their OWN records they should totally make it their own and make the song fit in with the other songs on their album or whatever and interpret the melodies and adapt it to their own style...

But on an actual tribute/covers album of one band, such as Kiss or whatever, I personally think the covers all to be in the same general style/genre of music as the original band. Because obviously the only people that are gonna buy a Kiss tribute are Kiss fans who probably don't give a shit about what the Mighty Mighty Bosstones sound like and if they make the song "their own". You'd wanna hear good rockin' versions of your fave Kiss songs by other hard rock artists usually... Spin The Bottle does that well, so does Humanary Stew, and the Poison tribute put out by the guys from Pretty Boy Floyd & Shameless does that too, its purely glam.

Thats the difference in my opinion. The context in which the song is being covered, and in this case its a Kiss tribute album. I don't think Kiss My Ass was a good tribute album to listen to because it sounded more like a collection of covers that unrelated bands had recorded fo themselves for their records (even though they were recorded just for the album). To me it just sounds like Gene Simmons trying to prove how wide Kiss' influence was on all different genres of music, which is fair enough and a good idea because its very true, but not a good CD to listen to start to finish.

Humanary Stew is good!! I don't think that any tribute to any of the legends can be bad, whether the band makes it their own song or not.... it's a tribute to their hero's/influences and it would be very very boring if they all tried to make it sound like the original artists, for one thing - it would not do justice to the original and 2ndly, if I wanted to listen to the original song, I would just buy the original album....

Spacewalk (The Ace Frehley tribute) is very good.
Dragon Attack (the Queen tribute) is almost as good
KISS My Ass has about four good tracks, but is mostly awful.
Bat Head Soup is marvellous except for Suicide Solution
Nativity In Black is okay
NIB II is horrible except for Slayer and Megadeth. Not that I like either of those bands much, but they do play Sabbath well.

I think that's all the tribute albums I've heard. Must get around to Humanary Stew at some stage.

I want to get the Holy Dio one at some stage, all I have heard from it is pretty good. Both NIB Sabbath tributes are good. I haven't heard much else, only odd songs from each one. Bruce's cover of 'Black Widow' on Humanary Stew is quite good.

Die Krupps' industrial Metallica tribute is interesting. It isn't that great, but it got me into the band, who's original material is awesome, if you're into that kind of thing.

The version of Temple Of The King by Angel Dust absolutely SLAYS the original, as does Yngwies version of Gates Of Babylon, Gamma Ray do an awesome Long Live Rock And Roll, Jag Panzers version of Children Of The Sea is better than the original, Blind Guardian do an awesome Dont Talk To Strangers... GO BUY IT! :worship:
