aye...illegal downloading will be the death of many a label and band in the short term I believe

But on the contrary, more people hear the music. Thus more people buy it than potentially would have, because if they didn't know they'd like it, they'd be less likely to take the risk. Also, it brings more people to shows. I'd say it's very much a 2-sided coin.
