Guitar legend Steve Vai has shared the following message with his fans:
“Happy 24th Anniversary to Alive In An Ultra World. This was my first live album. I wanted to do something different, so I came up with the idea of studying the cultural music from a few dozen of the countries we were to visit on this tour, write a song for that country that has specific melodies, rhythm and phrasing based on the cultural music of the country being visited, and record that new song at the show in the country it was written for. This was a heavy lift when you consider all the composing, rehearsal and recording done on this tour, and back then there was no Pro Tools, only A-Dats.
Some of the songs written specifically for a country may not have logistically worked to record in that country, but were perhaps recorded at a following gig.
I believe Alive In An Ultra World” is the most ambitious live record ever made. ‘Whispering A Prayer’, the Celtic lullaby, was nominated for a Grammy, and there are still songs from this record that I put in the set list now and then. I really like this record. It captures a time and an extraordinary logistical feet that was undertaken. And it worked!
There are so many countries with rich cultural music that we missed, so I always hoped to do something like this again and cover some of those places we didn’t get to on this record. Enjoy!”
