Strain– Strain
Total Impact Records – 2007
By Dan Fisher
Strain have been around since 2001 and have created a formidable reputation for themselves through tireless gigging and a will to power. Demonstrating a sludgey ferocity that brings to mind bands such as Pantera and songs like 'Junkhead' by Alice in Chains, the band are currently in the studio recording an album that, according to the band, is going to be "heavier than Rick Waller (whale-like Pop Idol contestant) and Michelle Mcmanus (whale-like Pop Idol contestant) at a cheeseburger picnic." Indeed. But what about their current release, the self titled debut?
Well I'm certainly impressed by P.C.'s vocals but the rest of the band need to shape up. The riffing is kinda cool but only in a pub band way. There isn't enough originality and varience to engage the listener. Their saving grace are the vocals which kick arse in a royal way. Comparisons to Phil Anselmo are for once justified although please do remember that Philip possesses an awesome singing voice as well as his trademark growl. Whether this dude can sing as well remains to be seen. Their are some excellent moments here but I think the whole rhythm section needs a more aggressive sound if Strain are going to kick arse on a big scale.
