suggestion for new location for PP4

(edit - this line)
I head a lot of people talking about this at the show, so here's my idea...

ORLANDO.

International Airport
1,000s of hotels
Plenty of large venues
Food everywhere (no more worries)
a bazillion extra things to do during "down time"
plenty of "adult" entertainment for BEAR :)
warmer
it's very hard to get "lost" since everything is "tourist-friendly" (ie; extra signs on streets)

oh we get threads for which bands all the time.. hehehe

But this topic was mentioned by Glenn himself that he was toying with the idea of changing venues next year.. so I wanted to give him a thought out idea (long car ride home Sunday) that he could have on the table when he decides to start preparing for the next event.

He wants to change venues but also stay in Atlanta. the dude lives an hour outside of atlanta. it is alot easier for him to have it there than anywhere else.

The venue had its good and bad. The good:
Close to the hotel
Good view from almost any seat
Plenty of bars
Good sized stage

The bad:
Nothing else around except the hotel
Not enough room in the lobby for the vendors and the signing, etc.
Too many seats (which made everybody lazy and they just sat on their butts the whole show)

A venue with two stages would be awesome as it would allow for less downtime between performances and each band to play a longer set.

I agree with everything you said that was "good" about the show.....
I also agreed with not having enough room for the vendors and signings plus having to navigate around people who were smoking without getting burned!!

BUT....
I am glad that they have all of that seating at the venue. My feet were killing me so it was great to sit down for the bands I wasn't as interested in. It also gave the people who wanted to see "their" band play the opportunity to be up front and be close enough to take pictures. That is what was so great about this place. When you wanted to go up front , you could. You wouldn't be able to do that if there weren't any seats. Plus standing for 9-10 hours straight isn't my idea of fun. Just because you're not standing for a band doesn't mean your not having a great time. Edguy did get everyone in that place on their feet though and that was really impressive!!!!

2 stages is a good idea too....

As for a change in venue, east coast peole in the New York/NJ area get to see whoever they want whenever they want. How about giving some other people in the US a chance, not to mention the cost to stay in New York. It's fine in Atlanta and as someone else mentioned, it's a matter of who's playing, not where.

I had a great time....thanks everyone!!!!

How do we in New York get to see whoever we want whenever we want? I can't see Threshold, Pain of Salvation, Silent Force, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Kamelot, Balance of Power, Edguy, and countless other great bands whenever I want. I don't know where you've been, but there is total garbage playing in New York. Maybe recently, due to this last festival, we are able to see Symphony X and Blind Guardian, but so is everyone else since they are doing a U.S. tour.

When it comes to this type of music, I feel that anywhere in the US is a good place since these bands just don't tour here. Am I missing something?

My only complaint was the lack of places to eat on Saturday near the venue. 90% of the stores close down in Atlanta on Saturdays :(
I walked all the way to 3rd street until I finally found a nice sub place :erk:

The Tabernacle in Atlanta.... over 3,000 count audience possiblility....nice size lobby on 2nd floor plus area on 1st floor for vendors... a bar directly on the main floor, so you suicidals don't have to leave the scene to get quenched :).... it's an older venue, but it was good enough for Dream Theater!!!

I enjoyed my stay in atlanta. I am from Boston. My complaints would be that the venue didn;t sell food. I couldn't belive that an 8 hour had no food (although they did let you leave and re-enter with your stub). I would like to see them move it every year just because it would allow me to see different cities. If they move it next year my main requirment is warm weather. I thought Atlanta was warm. Wend. and Thurs. were ok but the other days weren't good. I flew back on Sunday to a small snow storm and it was still 12 degree's warmer in Boston that it was in Atlanta. So the guy who says Orlando I say go for it, Although I have been to Orlando 20 times.

I belive the NY comment was more directed at EVERY other type of band will play that area an California before thinking of doing other remote areas...

the last Iced Earth tour didnt even come through Florida and that's where they started!!

Southeastern dates are usually last and then the bands change, etc.. etc...

Anyone remember the Operation Rock And Roll Tour with Alice Cooper / Judas Priest / Motorhead / Metal Church & Dangerous Toys ??? By the time that show came to Florida (not that long into the tour) we lost Motorhead & Metal Church. I can understand that this could be on account of any NUMBER of reasons (previous scheduling, yadda yadda) but stuff like that happens all the time unless you live near NY or LA.

What I meant to say (and I didn't mean to offend anyone) is that every time a band books a tour, it is almost a given that they will pass through the tri-state area and CA (like someone else posted earlier). I am originally from PA and recently visited home for a week and by some fluke was able to see a show that didn't even bother to come out west. I would just like to see the show stay at a place that is more neutral . I know that more than half of these bands have never been in the US, hence Progpower but I also know for a fact that a friend of mine is going to see Blind Guardian/Sym X in the Tri-state area. We on the other hand have to fly to San Fran to see them play- one of the only 16 places that they are playing which gets expensive very quickly. Believe me when I say that just about everytime there is a US tour, Salt Lake gets missed (As well as a few other selected states/cities). Even Dream Theater only comes here every other album. I know, maybe I should just move.....Even if garbage is playing in NY, at least you have NJ, PA, Montreal, New England Area.... a majority of the midwest and west coast does not have that luxury when ANY underground metal band puts together a tour of some kind, these people usually have to travel anywhere from 6-10 hours from home to see a good show unless the band(s) have a "Rush" type popularity doing a 45-60 city tour, not bands in the underground... that's just my observation/experience. I did not mean to offend anyone with my post.

Regardless of where the festival may be in the future, the comments regarding what was good and what was bad about the experience are extremely helpful. If the festival remains in Atlanta in the near future, the information (particularly about what may have been bad) hopefully will provoke some of us familiar with the area to help think of solutions that would make the entire experience a little more pleasant the next time around (such as finding something to eat without missing any of the action). If the festival ends up moving to a new locale, hopefully the information will serve as a heads up to individuals in the new host city, so that similar solutions can be thought of ahead of time, if the potential for the same problems exists.

With respect to everything that was under Glenn's control, all I can say is UNBELIEVABLE !!! Proving that last year was no fluke, this year's festival again ran like a well-oiled machine.

It was a blast being with everyone again this year, and I look forward to seeing everyone the next time around, whenever, and wherever...

damn, was that a great show. I caught it at Pine Knob in Clarkston, Michigan. To bad you missed Motorhead and Metal Church, they put on a hell of a show. I still remember that to this day and it's funny you mentioned it because I was talking about it with one of the guys in between sets this weekend.

Hey....I came out from Salt Lake City too. I thought Atlanta was pretty cool....easy to get around on the MARTA system...and cheap to see the Thrashers play on Sunday evening. I just wish it had been warmer.

Salt Lake does miss a lot of stuff, but we're pretty close to Vegas and LA, so you can see tons of stuff there. I had to go to California to see King Diamond...but was lucky to see Rush in SLC and Vegas.

Hell, I was just glad that Gamma Ray played in the US and I was able to see it. Next time they tour, I'm just going to Europe and seeing a bunch of shows....hopefully Helloween too.

I think that the cold weather in Atlanta was a fluke. Maybe I'm wrong, but my friends that live there said that it wasn't that bad. See, I'm just happy that it was only "cold" and not snowing! haha! I'm from CO, living in MI - Atlanta wasn't unbearably cold to me.

I really like having the fest in Atlanta! Any further away and I wouldn't have been able to make it due to being a poor college student. I can't afford to fly but I also couldn't take one more hour in the car *bangs head on desk*

There were so many things that I liked about Earthlink and Atlanta that I would want to see again if the venue moved. Things like "good" hotels that are close, easy public transportation, not a bad seat in the house, the bathrooms were decent (it took me forever to find the women's room!), plenty of places to sit (except it was misery trying to find two seats together before Angra), intimate environment & lobby rather than large impersonal arena (it helped to establish the community that we all enjoyed), a large open floor but not too big that the seats are too far away, excellent stage that wasn't too high, too low or too far away, and importantly parking was easy to find, close, and cheap. We were able to park on the first level of a garage no more than 3 blocks away for $5 on Friday and free on Saturday!! That was very important to me certainly since I didn't want to walk 12 blocks to the hotel in the cold at night by myself, etc...

Bad things... well... as much as I liked the smaller intimate setting, it was a bit too small in the lobby area. I think it would have helped to get rid of some of the extra seating in the lobby area, freeing up walking paths.

Another thing... there were two exits in the stadium area and I think three in the lobby, but if there was a fire I'm afraid we'd lose a few peers :-\

Also I really wish there was food on the premises (or a fast-service restaurant extrememly close that was overly prepaired for the influx of fans) I never left because I didn't want to be stuck somewhere else waiting for food, but I also didn't like pigging out before hand

I also think the vendors need more room to spread out their merchandise. I missed out on a few cool items because I couldn't see them while passing by. I kind of wish the CDs were in a separate section than the shirts, posters, etc.. I know that's up to the vendors and not the organizers, but it was my only major quip with the whole event. Also perhaps the bands could have their own table away from the labels and distro vendors. It was very difficult to find merch from bands that were actually playing, other than CDs and a few t-shirts of some of the bands... Just wondering, did Edguy bring ANYTHING to sell??? :bah:

Things I liked that have nothing to do with the venue:
Coat Check!!!!
Ability to leave and come back with stub/stamp!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I've said my part... I had 16 hours to think about it on the way home. I think that Atlanta was very easy to get around and a great city to host the event. The Earthlink is nice but expendable if need be.

My only major complaint the whole weekend was

1. Lack of food (though I was smart on Saturday and ordered 2 lunches and put one in the fridge to nuke later when I got hungry)

2. Not enough space in the lobby. I'm sure this was a complaint from the vendors to because when bands were doing signings it was so packed you couldn't even look at cD's.

OTher than that I thought It was a hell of a show.

As for the weather, Thursday was great but I can't really complain, I'm from Michigan to and when I got back Sunday there was snow on my car.:(
