Just because St Anger met with some disappointment and mixed reviews, don't go thinking Metallica has forgotten how to put on a hella ARGh show! The lights went down and "The Ecstacy of Gold" started up, the crowd went nucking futs immediately and did not stop or slow down for the next 2 - 3 hours. Jaymz is still in excellent form, and his stage presence seems bigger than ever since coing out of rehab and a recent birthday (40!) The (approximate) setlist was something like this:
Battery
Master of Puppets
Harvester of Sorrow
Sad But True
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Creeping Death
Frantic
St. Anger
No Remorse
Seek and Destroy
Nothing Else Matters
Enter Sandman
Blackened
One
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
This is my first gig with Rob Trujillo at bass, and he truly wears his "Robzilla" mantle well! This guy is an animal onstage, jumping around like a crazed gorilla bent on ripping some poor soul to shreds. Larz was all balls as always, putting his very life into each performance. Krk still carries a mean pick and slices and dices his leads every bit as good as he did back in the day. Metallica is back and bigger than ever, their shows are no less awesome and electrifying. Don't miss them on their solo tour in the spring, you'll hate yourself.
On a personal note, I was able to meet a piece (2 actually) of Metallihistory- a friend of mine (Txx, you RAWK!) hooked me up with backstage access- the Rubber Room. Whilst there basking in the glory of the 10 foot headless nude statues, I met Ron McGovney and Lloyd Grant, the very very original bassist and lead guitar of Metallica, they recorded the "Hit the Lights" demo with Jaymz and Larz for the Metal Massacre album. Both were very cool indeed, teling tales of the Krunch Bunch waaaaay back before Dave Mustaine and the immortal Cliff Burton were on board. Sadly, the timing was bad and we were unable to meet the 21st century Metallica, as they were only moments away from stage time and making last minute preperations...
