sxsw

I just talked to Toby about 10 min ago--they're still in Austin, and the show last night apparently was AWESOME--they played well, huge crowd, etc. The bill looked really cool (KD, Harvey Milk, Torche, Steve Brodsky, and more...).

they'll be back in Brooklyn on Tuesday for a show at Monkeytown, a video-art weird restaurant/art space that has prix fixe Futurist cuisine (like $40 though!) I'll see 'em then!

I was able to see both shows in Austin as well as the one in Houston. All three were unreal and the new material unfolded brilliantly over the span of those three days. By the last concert (which was, not unexpectedly, the best of the performances in my opinion), I had already fallen in love with all the new music.

The performance during the Hydrahead showcase at SXSW was the weakest because they only got to play two songs, which I didn't feel allowed them enough time to really show what they were all about. The outdoor one the following day, though, was utterly blissfil.

The abundance of woodwinds and their central role in the sound was stunning, and I was excited to see Toby bust out the clarinet for a section or two. The new drummer blew my mind. His dynamics are wild and his playing is bludgeoning and graceful. He, Toby, and Mia seemed really in tune with one another. The new material was so exciting with so many new elements, that I really cannot wait for Blue Lambency Downard to come out.

I almost did the same thing with the Richmond show last week. I had happened to think to myself "I wonder when the new album's coming out?" and checked their Myspace page, only to find that the show was in like 3 days. I would have been really disappointed if I'd found out the day after the show.

the baltimore show was supposedly one of the best of the tour i think, too!

i just got back from the Monkeytown show, and it was great. the venue is a small (32 person) room with these pillowed benches/tables all around the edge, with the band in the middle; all four walls have video projection screens, and they serve weirdo food during the show.

it was just really cool. i got a $22 tandoori lamb shank and a cheese plate and roasted beets and a pomegranate whiskey sour and then kicked back and lay amongst pillows and watched Yuko's cool video stuff and listened to Kayo Dot. it was packed full too, I saw people standing by the entrance, and when I left after the 7:30 set a bunch of people were streaming in for the 10pm set (I saw Champ amongst 'em).

Kevin Hufnagel's solo performance was also rad--his first ever, he said! not at all Dysrhythmia-y, and not like Mick Barr type stuff at all, either (Mick was there, though, sittin' with Colin in the corner).
