Symphony X - Paradise lost

Yeah, the guitars and specialy the bass sound a little bit fake, but the whole mix is ten times better than the previous albums. Are they pods too?

Yeah, it's the typical tone for Romeo, but it's a solid album...although there seem to be more ballads than full-on shredtacular greatness.

It's exactly the album I was waiting for from them. So I'm not disappointed, but not surprised at all, and their constant "recycling" of bits is a bit boring after so many albums... But they all kill, and Russell IS the best metal vocalist ever, no doubt about that.

i feel the same way... production-wise i think that the guitars don't sound great, but work great with the type of music they're playing. the bass clearly sucks though :/

and i like mats leven better :D

Been taking a listen to it for the past few days. I second Brett, Russell is a top notch vocalist, both on record and live. I dig the production on Paradise Lost too, very good. On further listen I can see the POD tone, but really, I could care less, Romeo still shreds.

I think he used to record with a Mesa in the past, but he toured with Vettas. Don't know what he used on the album, but it sounds like him so whatever, that's a good point even if that's maybe not the best guitar sound ever. Pretty impressive riffs, very clean and smooth.

i still think their best album is V. that is the album before the odyssey.

that album absolutely OWNS!!!! the odyssey is also a great great album but it sounded more crappy i think. the whole line 6 crap was present. V was dual recto and i believe in D standard tuning it sounded a bit more badass. the playing was a lot better also.

MR absoletly RIPS!!!!! and Brett you are 100% right Russel is one of the best metal vocalists of all time I think. i've seen them live a bunch of times here in NYC and he is better live it seems. if anyone here has never heard it and has some desire to learn more seriously check out "V: The New Mythology Suite" it is absolutely awesome. I guarantee you will not be disapointed.

That's a trait getting really little appreciation these days...
Romeo really has a sort of a signature sound and (too) many guitarists don't have that.
Never liked his sound too much on its own, but in the whole picture it's great!
