Professionally filmed video footage of SYSTEM OF A DOWN's first-ever concert in Armenia, which took place earlier today (Thursday, April 23), can be seen below. The concert marked the culmination of SYSTEM OF A DOWN's "Wake Up The Souls" tour, a global trek to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The arena tour, which is SYSTEM OF A DOWN's first since 2013 and included the band's first-ever performance in Yerevan's Republic Square, kicked off April 6 at the Forum in Los Angeles. April 24, 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, an attempted extermination of the Armenian people by the Ottoman Empire. From 1915 through 1923, 1.5 million men, women and children were starved, shot, beaten and banished to die in the desert during one of history's greatest crimes. Though considered by many to be the first genocide of the 20th century, the Turkish government denies it ever happened. SYSTEM OF A DOWN's landmark tour took them to Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands and Russia. The group, whose four members are all of Armenian descent, have lost family members and history to the Genocide and have worked tirelessly over the years to promote awareness. SYSTEM OF A DOWN singer Serj Tankian told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that the Armenian Genocide has been largely forgotten by history. "You know, I mean, it was all over the media in 1915 when it occurred, but since it's not put in the books as a genocide and not reviewed and studied like the Holocaust has been, like even the Cambodian genocide has been — you know, we've talked about Saddam Hussein's killing of the Kurds, etc. — all of that is known in modern times, but this is the first forgotten genocide of the century," he said.
