I know it was this guy's idea:

What do you think of it?

The Internet has been like the Wild West since its inception.

I expect we will start to see more policing and regulation in the next few years. And in 10 years you'll probably need something like a drivers license to use it. At least in the USA. I love democrats!

^This man's got it right.

Even an accusation of posting copyrighted material, or an accusation of linking to a site that has copyrighted material, is enough for the entire site to be removed.

Again. Just an accusation. No proof, no trial. And as far as I'm aware it's not even going to be the government in charge, the power to kill sites will be given to the major entertainment companies. You know, the guys who would actually prefer the internet to fuck off so they would be exclusive distributors of media just like the "good old days"

Also there's the fact that the means suggested to remove the site wont work, it will just mean you can't access it via it's domain name (e.g. google.com) you'll just need to know the ip address and you can still pirate all the stuff you want.

I have no problem with cracking down on piracy whatsoever. I do have a problem with the government (particularly the inept U.S. Government) making laws built around technology, because they almost always get it wrong. There are already laws on the books about piracy. The government needs to look at what is already there and work from that point without making technology-dependent laws.

The US government cannot be trusted with anything newer than cold war technology. look at the average age of congress. now imagine your parents (maybe even grandparents) trying to run the internet. people who can't even forward an e-mail are in charge of a whole country. that has just got to piss you off.
