Temple Of Baal – Servants Of The Beast
Oaken Shield Records – FPG17 – 2003
By Russell Garwood

French black metal group Temple Of Baal play run of the mill true black metal, emulating the Norwegian bands of the early nineties. A three piece, the group comprises guitarist/vocalist and founder Amduscias, Arkdaemonn on bass, and drummer Herr Rikk. As is to be expected from such music, the production is by no means clear – the tinny guitars and powerless bass help create a less accessible sound. The vocals are a typical black metal growl, showing little variation, while occasional more complex dual guitars are welcome and make the music slightly less monotonous. The drumming is straightforward but solid.

Temple Of Baal have an unadventurous, repetitive sound which I find can become monotonous. This said fans of true black metal will appreciate their music, and no doubt not mind the lack of originality. Occasional changes in tempo and melodic sections help make “Servants Of The Beast” more interesting for those indifferent to the genre, but for those who dislike the true aesthetic it is perhaps one to avoid.
