If you look at his 2 main bass drums, there are 2 more drums in front of those. What's the effect of doing that?

It looks like they are connected so that they form one drum (for each main bass drum), so probably just for a deeper sound.

I dont know dude, but remenber that Terry Bozzio has demonstrated that you can also use the drum kit as a melodic insturement.RR1 Player said:

Most of that stuff is rather unneccessary, in that first pic, the back row of toms on the left look impossible to reach period. I just dont see the point =(
Those aren't drums, they're bass woofers. I believe they are a DW exclusive. They give the bass drums a bit of a deeper sound.RR1 Player said:

He tunes each tom and cymbal to a specific pitch, and uses his drums as a melodic instrument as well as a percussion instrument. There's a song off of Jordan Rudess' "Feeding the Wheel" where Rudess and Bozzio play a unison run with Bozzio playing the same pitches on his toms as Rudess is on his keyboard, and that's just one example of how he puts those to use. When he is soloing or doing fills, he will actually use the toms melodically, and play in key with the song.

Of course, if you have such a kit, you use it. However, I doubt anyone ever needed something like that

The thing that sets Bozzio apart from many (probably most) drummers, is the fact that he uses his kit melodically as well as for percussion, thus, he does need something like that. Although not completely necessary, you wouldn't be able to use a 5 piece kit in such a way, hence the reason for having such a huge kit...But no matter, it's friggen amazing!
