so yeah, i came up with this at 2am while unable to sleep and listening to Morbid Angel. anyhow.

what do you like more, the band itself or the style they play? because myself, i love Morbid Angel. love love love them. but i don't own 90428 albums by clone bands because i don't listen to Morbid Angel because i love love love death metal, i love that particular band.

reason i ask is because i see a lot of people that buy a thousand extremely similar albums and then bitch when one band changes their tune a bit and start doing something different. these type of people don't really like bands, they like styles.

at least that's what it seems like to me. i'm probably wrong like usual.

I'm more accepting of the new style if a band I like takes that route, but then if I grow to like that style then I won't exclude similar artists of the same.

Of course if they switch to a crap sound, and it's not something i like or can grow to like, fuck the band.

I like a style, not the band.

Which is why Emperor's later albums suck ass compared to their first 2. And why Metallica's '90s output isn't worth discussing compared to their first 4. And why Queensryche ceased to be relevant after "Empire." And why In Flames...well, you get the drift.

That's a pretty good question. I suppose I go for styles moreso than bands. I typically listen to death/black/folk/viking and so bands that play those styles are much more appealing to me based simply on that fact. So, I use style to find bands that I like and will generally listen to a high number of bands that may sound similar.

There are some exceptions though. For instance, Type O Negative is one of my Top 5 bands ever, but I don't necessarily listen to anything that sounds remotely like them. I guess it works both ways, but I generally would fall into the style category.

bands really ...

and we had a discussion about MA on Saturday .. and kind of decided that they are really untouchable at what they do ... I mean really untouchable

even JK confessed at revisiting Altars of Madness lately

a mixture of both, I'm too too stoned to dig the matter deeper right now, really. But I'm definitely no band whore i.e. I'm not going to cling deperately on a once worshipped band if they happen to release gay shite. For example, people who try that hard to defend Samael's latest album although the disappointment shows pretty obviously in their tone make me feel like blowing their hypocrite asses with dynamite.

I'm all about the styles, but some of my favourite bands, i'm willing to give a change in style a chance, to see if I like it or not.

:kickass:

although last night i truly realized that Heretic is their worst album by far. has some good ideas but they need to reinvent the wheel instead of grinding it away. i hope that Vincent will stick around for some studio work, that could give them the spark they need. :kickass:

:kickass: third time's a charm.

I wish I was too too stoned. I'm anxious to listen to my new gay love for Burzum whilst high.

oh man ... HERETIC ... i don't usually give discs a chance as you know, but this one really crept up on me ...

i mean ... STRICKEN ARISE ... listen to Sandoval on that one, those drums are getting raped ... or the fucking hellish groove of BENEATH THE HOLLOW

It's just black metal w/ more emphasis on folky melodies and sometimes very folky. In its simplest explanation.

it's definetelly the folk elements that annoy me ... but it could be that because of my background and listneing to this type of folk music in its pure form on the radio ... me and the gypsies ... it really gets to me.
there is absolutely nothing "metal" about it.

I just thank God that NB never abused this in their music, there is a little bit on 'n crugu ... but oh man ...

yeah, those two songs are KILLER, especially Beneath the Hollow, but i dunno. overall seemed too by the numbers for them.

i mean, bad Morbid Angel is still pretty good to me, so there you go. :tickled:

Just steer clear of the bands who incorporate too much on the folk side; there are lots of viking-styled black metal bands who only venture a little bit into that realm. Though you've already expressed distaste for Moonsorrow & Falkenbach, who IMO are the 2 best purveyors of the entire genre (along w/ Thyrfing).

 at IoftheStorm's avatar. "booyaka".

I don't know what this thread is really about, haha, but as Mark and Aurel pointed out, my recent 'revisit' to the old school death metal releases really has led me to believe that Morbid Angel were probably the most significant, amazing, death metal band (considering their musical depth/proficieny), as were Celtic Frost (for their musical depth/being eons ahead of their time).

I love lamp. [/brick]
