Well, my dissertation is being sent out this week, Friendsgiving has come and gone, and I'm enjoying Sunday evening with a cocktail.
Over the past few years, I've experimented more with mixology. Not sure if anyone else here cares to adulterate their hard liquor with various flavors; but in this thread, feel free to share your personal favorites--and yes, make fun of each other for the drinks we like.
My cocktail of choice is a Black Manhattan:
2 oz rye whiskey (I find that Sazerac blends nicely)
1 oz amaro (I use Averna)
Most people throw in a dash of orange bitters, which is fine. I have a small bottle of locally-made shitake bitters, which I think complements the amaro wonderfully (they have an almost cacao-ish flavor). Spicy bitters also work well (e.g. nutmeg, allspice, etc.). Most bars include a cherry, which I find too sweet along with the amaro. I like an orange peel though.
Anybody else try their hand at mixology? Or have favorite cocktails?
